Last year marked the biggest investment in Dreamworld's history as the park launched a new Buzzsaw thrill ride and announced an alliance with Animation giant DreamWorks. The DreamWorks Experience Precinct will open for Easter, with a Kung Fu Panda land opening at Christmas time.

The Cook Islands has had a strong presence at the recent Flight Centre Travel Expos with the latest Auckland expo attracting over 21,000 consumers at the ASB Showgrounds over the weekend. Cook Islands Tourism’s very distinctive green Visit Cook Islands booth decked out by local designer Tav’s and 3 man stringband seemed to attract many would be holiday makers. It even attracted Puss n Boots who was more than happy to get a shot with the Cook Islands girls.
 
According to Cook Islands Tourism NZ Sales & Marketing Manager, Kelly Hansen “The Flight centre expos are always a prominent feature in our activity for the year and we’ve found that this years expo has definitely attracted a lot more genuine enquiries on our destination and believe its been very worthwhile attending the expos.”

There’s a lot of great stuff happening in Samoa in 2012 and as always one of the biggest events will be the SIGFA International Game Fishing Tournament. Good numbers of blue marlin and sailfish can be expected, along with XXL yellowfin, mahi mahi and wahoo. The tag and release category of the tournament is always hotly contested, with 95% of all bill fish being released.

A recent gourmet tour of New Caledonia not only highlighted the cuisine of the hotels and restaurants in the capital Noumea, it also took participants off the usual beaten track to see what rural life had to offer a travelling foodie.

Amongst the activities were a ‘Bike and Cook’ electric bicycle tour of Noumea, taking participants to such spots as the Noumea daily market and famous local patisseries. Participants then enjoyed a cooking lesson afterwards. A second activity on offer was the Master Apprentice cooking lesson with Le Meridien Hotel’s resident head chef, Michael Boussemart.

Auckland club College Rifles scored back-to-back titles at the 2011 International Sevens in Heaven rugby tournament played in Rarotonga, Cook Islands, recently. Seven sides from New Zealand – including four women’s teams – took part in the 22-team tournament which is one of the highlights of the Cook Islands sports calendar.

Following a series of performances in Auckland during RWC 2011 , the Fiji Police Band has earned rave reviews. The 40-strong Police Band’s performances included three daily concerts in Ellerslie’s Town Square, the Auckland suburb which adopted the ‘Flying Fijians’ during their tilt at RWC 2011 and appearances at Fiji community events as well as a special performance for students of Kowhai Intermediate School, adjacent to Eden Park.

Aucklanders escaped to a tropical oasis in their lunch breaks recently for the Pacific Showcase held inside The Cloud on Auckland’s waterfront. Held over three days in conjunction with the 40th Pacific Islands Forum, each Pacific Island displayed their cultural offerings through performances, cooking demonstrations, products, music and art.

World Journeys director Chris Lyons recently returned from escorting their 33-day ‘Grand Tour of South America journey. Highlights included the Galapagos Islands and the Amazon, Machu Picchu, the Orient-Express train through the Andes, Buenos Aires, the Iguassu Falls and Rio de Janeiro. World Journeys warn that the August 2012 departure of this journey is already half full and a limit of 24 guests applies.

A group of New Zealand agents were given the chance to check out some of Hong Kong’s biggest and best tourist attractions recently.

The Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB), Cathay Pacific Airways, the Harbour Plaza Hotels and PC Tours hosted the group who experienced the Sky 100 observation deck and the Big Bus tour of Kowloon, as well as some perennial favourites including a ride on the Peak Tram, a visit to Hong Kong Disneyland and a ride in the crystal cabin of the Ngong Ping 360 cable car to the Giant Buddha.

Two teams of Auckland Airport firefighters took to Queenstown’s Coronet Peak to compete in the inaugural Firefighter Chill Factor Challenge in a bid to raise money for the Bruce Grant Youth Trust. The Chill Factor Challenge, held on August 26, saw teams of firefighters complete as many runs as they could in two hours, all the while attached to a fire hose.

Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al-Maktoum, Chairman and Chief Executive of the Emirates Airline & Group (right), presented the winning trophy to the French-trainer of Americain after the six-year-old’s impressive victory at Flemington Racecourse.
