One of New Zealand’s top fashion designers, Trelise Cooper, is assisting with the design of the next Air New Zealand uniform.

Cooper was selected after a review of more than 25 Kiwi designers and was chosen for her design concepts, according to the carrier.
The uniform will be introduced next year to coincide with the introduction of a new fleet of 777-300 aircraft.
“We will introduce a uniform to coincide with our new long haul product and interiors early next year,” Air New Zealand group general manager international airline Ed Sims said.
Sims said Cooper was chosen after presenting a collection of more than 60 of her design concepts at the end of last year.
“Since then she has been working with dozens of Air New Zealanders to further understand the style and functionality needs of seven different work groups scattered across many different parts of the world.
“We have also been working closely with Trelise to ensure the uniform colour palette works with our soon to be unveiled new aircraft interiors,” said Sims.
The uniform is based on New Zealand themes and allows for some choice.
For female staffers, this will include a variety of jacket, skirt and trouser options as well as dresses, blouses and shirts.
The uniform for women is also more feminine and tailored based on their feedback.
The collection also has varying levels of formality, particularly for cabin crew.
There's a more formal look when travelling through airports and welcoming travellers onboard, changing to a more casual style once in the air.
Uniforms for in-flight concierges, pilots and several other work groups are currently being developed.
The final design for the uniform will be completed over the next few months after further staff feedback, followed by fabric selection and testing, wearer trials and production of around 90,000 garments for a uniform to be worn by more than 5000 staff.
Cooper said as someone who flies regularly herself she understands the need for uniform functionality.
She joins a line-up of designers who have produced the national carrier’s uniform including Christian Dior, Nina Ricci, Isobel Harris, Barbara Lee and Zambesi.
