Malaysia – shopping, wildlife and more

Malaysia’s affordability, events, shopping appeal, exotic wildlife and natural environments are key factors in the destination’s growing appeal to Kiwis, according to Tourism Malaysia.

Whether visitors want to live it up in Kuala Lumpur with shopping and nightlife, trek through rainforests with native orang-utans, scuba dive in pristine water environments or just relax in an eco-luxury lodge, we’ve got it covered for families, businesspeople or backpackers,” said Tourism Malaysia regional director Shahrin Mokhtar.

New Zealand visitors to Malaysia grew 33.4 per cent in June 2009 compared with the same month last year, according to Immigration Department of Malaysia statistics.

Kuala Lumpur is the bustling capital of Malaysia known for its lively ethnic neighborhoods, skyline architecture, colonial buildings, shopping and scenic natural parks.

Further afield, Sarawak on the island of Borneo has some interesting resorts such as the Permai Rainforest Resort (www.permairainforest.com), an eco-resort for nature lovers and the Borneo Highlands Resort (www.borneohighlands.com.my), an environmentally-friendly retreat with a top golf course.

In nearby Sabah, clients can stay at the Sukau Rainforest Lodge for an eco-lodge experience (www.sukau.com).

For tourists keen on wildlife, they can consider the Turtle Volunteering programme on Sarawak’s Talang Talang Island (www.sarawakforestry.com) or for those looking to recharge their batteries in a natural environment, Bako National Park is home to the Proboscis monkeys, pitcher plants, jungle streams, waterfalls, secluded beaches and trekking trails (www.forestry.sarawak.gov.my).

Visitors can get up close and personal with the intelligent great ape that is a native to Malaysia at one of the orang-utan sanctuaries. In Sabah, there is the Sepilok Orang-utan sanctuary or in Sarawak visit the Semenggoh Wildlife Centre.

For clients wanting a marine experience, there is the ‘scuba’ village of Kapalai, located 15 minutes from Sipadan in Sabah, one of the world’s renowned dive sites.

Fun in KL

Back in Kuala Lumpur, a new nightspot is the Sultan Lounge at the Mandarin Oriental for cocktails and a relaxed ambience. For jazz lovers, No Black Tie is a hot spot to try out or perhaps suggest clients head over to the cultural, dining and entertainment district of Asian Heritage Row.

Latest music venues include Zouk KL or Maison for some of the best DJs and gigs.

And if it’s shopping that’s on the menu, Pavilion Kuala Lumpur should feature on the itinerary. It has six themed precincts including Gourmet Emporium — a food haven offering a full-range of dining choices; Couture Pavilion — home to flagship stores and boutiques of international brands; HOME offering the latest concepts in interior décor; and Seventh Heaven — the ‘ladies only’ floor offering pampering and spa services. A popular choice in Seventh Heaven is the KL FishSpa located on the fourth floor.
